The Journey to Mazzy: A Tale of Adventure, Mutiny, & Fun
Hey Hey! Thanks for stopping by. I'm Danielle, the founder of Mazzy, and I'd love to share my journey with you—a story of endlessly transplanting, making friends, globe-trotting, and ultimately of the creation of what I hope will be a life changer, not just for me, but also my friends, and all of you friends I just haven’t met yet.
Welcome to the Mazz Mutiny, where we’re leading the charge to reclaim our time, our passions, and our enjoyment of the world again. This is our time, our mutiny against the deadly status quo that has left us feeling so isolated and alone. A Mazz Mutiny!
The Early Years: Always the New Kid
Growing up, I moved almost every year. My family’s frequent relocations made me the perpetual new kid. It wasn’t easy, but it taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and making friends quickly. Also, growing up with a disabled brother meant that advocating for and accommodating his needs was a daily part of life. These experiences shaped me into someone who could always find a way to make the most of any given situation, to find the joy, even in the unexpected. Especially in the unexpected.
Being the new kid over and over again gave me a unique perspective on the importance of community and connection. I know what it’s like to have it, and I know what it’s like to be just outside of it. I think most people don’t realize just how close they live to serendipitous magic every day. This is Mazzy’s secret sauce.
Going Global: In the World & Of the World
College was my jam. Everyone was the new kid and we were totally untethered. I was so excited to get there, I went a year early and lived in the dorms for my senior year of high school. But even that was too constraining. I graduated early and headed out to Denver for law school.
Although law school was a terrible idea for me, a good friend convinced me to take a class that changed my life forever--European Union Law. I didn't want to take it. I had never given much thought to the world at large and wasn't interested. I was hooked at Chapter 1. By Chapter 8, I had signed up for my first study abroad classes and bought myself a Eurail pass.
Over the next few years, I traveled solo to more than 20 countries, skydived in the Swiss Alps, volunteered in Africa, worked for the Attorney General of Ireland, and lived and worked in Brussels with the European Union. Each place offered unique treasures and unforgettable experiences, enriching my life in ways I could never have imagined. These global adventures were more than just thrilling; they were eye-opening. They showed me the power of stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new cultures and experiences, of finding shared humanity. This sense of adventure and discovery is at the core of what Mazzy offers—an invitation to explore, connect, and grow.
Following Dreams: From Founding Companies to Finding Myself
Eventually it became time to settle down a bit. I came home, got married, had kids, and began living the startup life. I started a couple of software companies which ultimately led to a successful exit and a cushy corporate job. Despite the success, and seemingly everything I ever wanted, I realized I didn't enjoy what I had been doing and I craved a change. I realized I'd been chasing other people's dreams and it was time to chase my own. The problem was I didn’t have a clue what mine were.
For the past three years, I searched for that answer—What do I want? What do I love? What do I even really like? I began pursuing every idea I had for different careers, interests, and hobbies. I made a study of it and wrote a memoir documenting the journey. I started creating art and opened an online store to share it with the world. It felt like an excavation, a period of self-discovery all about finding out who I truly was, beyond all the training and people pleasing.
This phase of my life was crucial and unprecedented for me. It was about peeling back every layer to get to the heart of what truly mattered to me. Ultimately, I discovered that at my core, I wanted to create something that would help women like me—those who felt lost or disconnected—to find their way back to themselves and to each other. Mazzy was born from this desire to reclaim our time, passions, and sense of community and camaraderie.
